Beware of the Cook

by F.W. Wodell

It has been said that more people ar^ killed through gluttony than through drunkenness. The singer's life must he one of sacrifice. Many pleasures, including those of the table, must be, to a large extent, foregone if the voice is to be kept in first-class condition. Overeating is responsible for more singers' colds than are draughts.

Let the stomach get "out of order." and the nerves and voice show the effects at once. All singers know that the breath control, so necessary to good singing, is difficult to secure after eating a full meal.

The singer should find out what food agrees with and nourishes him and stick to that. As to stimulants - most singers are far better o" without them. One of the first questions asked by the throat specialist of the man singer who comes to him for assistance is: "Do you smoke much?" The moral is obvious.
